Celebrating music that reaches across a century of innovation, Fourth Coast Ensemble will present their concert Roaring Twenties on Monday, March 14, 2022 at 7:30pm CST. The venue, Overflow Coffee at 1449 S. Michigan Ave, is located in the recently renovated VeeJay Records building in the South Loop, a label that played a foundational role in Chicago’s blues, pop, and jazz scenes.
In addition to selections that honor the legacy of the musicians that recorded with VeeJay Records, the program will explore vocal music from the 1920s, from the boundary-pushing French art songs of Satie and Boulanger, to the haunting melodies of Weill’s Berlin Kabarett, to the blossoming of American jazz and its irresistible influence upon art songs of the era. The quartet will also pay homage to local composers that enrich our current musical impression of the 2020s. Acclaimed pianist Kuang-Hao Huang joins the quartet for this concert of songs that express the exuberance and irrepressible joy from this bookended century of musical osmosis.
This concert is made possible by generous sponsorship of Kent Dymak and Theodore Foss and will be simultaneously live-streamed in high definition via Fourth Coast Ensemble’s website to viewers that wish to attend the event remotely.
